  Making Medieval Music in the Modern Middle Ages

15th Century Shoe Making: Pattern & Techniques
This shoe making workshop will introduce the basic techniques of making a leather field shoe. Based on a 15th Century design, students can make adaptations to match a variety of styles/time periods. Students will leave class with a completed pattern which is unique to their foot. All techniques for making this shoe will be discussed and demonstrated.


Supplies Needed: Students should bring 1 sock, which will be cut apart and any orthotics to be worn with the shoes.


Norse Wire Weaving
We will learn the basics of Norse Wire Weaving. Students will receive everything that they need to complete one necklace.

Instructor will provide: wire, drawplates, dowels and findings

Supplies Needed: wire cutters, needlenose pliers


Norse Apron Dress Construction
This class will teach you how to make an apron dress. We will discuss fabric and color choice as well as several variants of the apron dress. You will leave the class with custom pattern and a small example dress which we will create during the class.

A basic knowledge of sewing will be helpful in this class, but is not required.

Supplies Needed: scissors

Marshalling Armored Combat in Tournaments and Wars
This class will cover rule changes for both beginning and senior marshals. Armor inspection for Armored Fights and Heavy Archers. The responsibilities of the Marshal at tournaments and wars will be covered.

Beginning Tablet Weaving
Geared toward the people who are just starting out. You will learn to warp up your loom, and a number of very basic patterns to weave.

Students age 14 and older. Please email the instructor (quincydew at aol.com) if you do not have an appropriate loom or cannot borrow one for the class.

Instructor will provide: enough wool yarn to make a belt

Supplies Needed: Students should bring a loom for tablet weaving, 20 cards/tablets, a shuttle, and scissors.


Drawn Thread Needlelace
Instructor has already removed threads from the material (to save class time). We will learn how to weave the threads into the material to create a lace pattern.
 
Instructor will provide: a handout and material to take home and work on.

Supplies Needed: scissors, magnifying device (if desired)


Introduction to Blazonry
AKA 'herald-ese 101' - an introduction to describing armory using heraldic terms. A basic understanding of heraldic terminology for tinctures, basic ordinaries, etc. will be helpful, but not necessary.

Supplies Needed: Note taking materials.


Making Medieval Music in the Modern Middle Ages
Come discuss sources, venues, instrumentation, successes and challenges in performing and promoting music from the Middle Ages in an SCA setting, then practice playing and singing some of the best surviving melodies.

The ability to sightread music would be a benefit, but is certainly not required.

Supplies Needed: Students can bring a recorder, guitar, harp, voice, drum or other instrument, as well as a music stand (if possible).
